Far from Russia
The bell towers are ringing
Somewhere in the Kremlin
Somewhere in my homeland
Somewhere

-- Marina Tsvetayeva (translated by Olga Carlisle)

Olga Andreyev Carlisle has never lived in Russia, and yet throughout her life Russia has never been far.

Far from Russia captures Olga Andreyev Carlisle's young life. We see her first as an aspiring painter in post-World War II Paris. There, she savors her independent life, free from the protective reaches of her Russian émigré parents, and meets and falls passionately in love with Henry Carlisle, an American studying on the GI Bill.

With Henry she comes to the United States, to Nantucket, where she is introduced to the much more reserved ways of her husband's family. Unlike the Andreyevs, forced from their homeland by political and artistic ideals, the Carlisles have lived on Nantucket for centuries. On the shores of her husband's homeland, it becomes abundantly clear to Olga how far she is from her family's home.

The couple then moves to New York City, where Olga begins to piece together a familiar community in this strange land of artists and writers. She continues to pursue painting, studying with the great Robert Motherwell. She befriends Mark Rothko and Robert Lowell, and in each of them finds the indelible mark of Russia: the poetry of Russia.

Olga Andreyev Carlisle makes vivid the influential and heady times she describes in both postwar Paris and 1960s New York. In Far from Russia, she succeeds in articulating the enduring grip of Russia, and how that homeland -- or rather the idea of that homeland -- shaped her world.

"Olga Carlise, the highly respected writer on all things Russian, now turns her fine painterly eye on a lifelong love affair with the dashing young GI who was to become her husband. A wonderful, touching, sweet memoir."

    Palm/eReader Information:
Palm/eReader eBooks can be read on your Palm, Pocket PC, Windows or Mac computer. The Palm/eReader can display styled text (italicized, underlined, etc.) and formatting as well as perform functions not found on other Palm OS eBook readers.
What are the requirements for Palm/eReader?

You'll need a Palm OS or PocketPC/Windows CE Personal Digital Assistant (PDA), or a Windows or Macintosh desktop (or laptop) PC.

    Palm OS Hardware:

    • PDAs including: Palm III series, V series, VII series, m100 series, m125 series, m500 series; Handspring Visor series; TRG Pro; Sony CLIE; IBM WorkPad.
    • 134KB of free memory for the Palm Reader application, plus sufficient free memory for each book (varies from 200KB to 2MB, depending upon the length of the book).
    • Palm Personal will not work with the Palm Reader. It doesn't have enough memory to handle all of our eBooks and there are some important technical differences in the Palm Personal's operating system that make it a less suitable platform for the Palm Reader.

    Palm OS Software:

    • Palm OS 3.0 or greater.
    • Synchronization software for downloading the Palm Reader and eBooks to your Palm device (e.g., the Palm Desktop software)

    PocketPC/Windows CE Hardware:

    • PocketPC series handhelds
    • 167-260K of free memory for the Palm Reader application, plus sufficient free memory for each book (varies from 200KB to 2MB, depending upon the length of the book)
    • 256KB free program space

    PocketPC/Windows CE Software:

    • PocketPC or PocketPC 2002
    • Synchronization software for downloading the Palm Reader and eBooks to your PocketPC device (e.g., the ActiveSync 3.1 software).

    Macintosh:

    • Mac OS 8.6 or later, using CarbonLib 1.5 or later/Mac OS X 10.1 or later
Is it true I can the Palm/eReader is not limited to one format?

The Palm Reader can read doc files. A doc file is a type of PDA file that ends in either .pdb or .prc. These text files have been specifically packaged for use on a PDA. Doc format is pretty much a standard for PDA documents, and the latest version of the Palm Reader can view them.

Can I use the Palm/eReader with the new Pocket PC's?

Yes, the Palm Reader is compatible with the following PocketPCs:

    • Hewlett-Packard Jornada
