Something Borrowed, Something Black
Loren Estleman, the Edgar Award-winning author of the Amos Walker novels, has been writing hard-boiled fiction for over twenty years. In the 1980s he created another memorable character, Peter Macklin, a guy who had integrity, intelligence, and a keen sense of justice... and was a hired killer, for almost twenty years. But he quit that business, leaving the mob, leaving Detroit, and leaving behind his life as a deadly, dangerous man. He also left his wife, and his son, cutting his ties to all his old connections.

It's been more than two years since then, and he's ready to start a new life, with Laurie, a beautiful, passionate woman who he met when she was working for his doctor's clinic as a receptionist. As the book opens, they're on their honeymoon in California, taking in the sights of Los Angeles... until one day there's a message for Macklin. It's his past calling. His old boss, Mr. Major, wants him to do one more job, and he doesn't take no for an answer. And just to make sure Macklin does his job, Major has one of his other people keep Macklin's new bride company. Macklin's off to San Antonio, where he's got to snuff out a bookie. He does it, and covers his tracks, but he's not finished. While Macklin's been doing Major's dirty work, Laurie's trying to shake off Abilene, a lanky, half-charming rustic who seems all right -- until Laurie tries to bolt from his car and he clips her on the mouth.

From then on things turn ugly, and we realize that this is no honeymoon for Macklin or Laurie. They're both fighting for their lives, as Macklin tries to escape a tightening web of police, while Laurie just tries to stay alive. Estleman's portrayal of the criminal mind, the subculture of crime and law-enforcement in this country, with its subtle interplay of legal, moral, and financial forces, has never been sharper. He keeps the reader on the edge of his seat as the deranged Abilene shows his sinister edge more and more clearly as the

Something Borrowed, Something Black

A Peter Macklin Novel
ONE

Johns Davis remembered feeling a chill the first time he entered the mission building of the Alamo, where Mexican troops in Napoleonic shakos and crossed white belts bayoneted and were bayoneted by the defenders of the Republic of Texas. At the time he’d associated the sensation with the presence of the spirits of the honored dead. Now he knew it was the air-conditioning.
He’d made many visits to the crumbling shrine since establishing himself in San Antonio, and familiarity and repetition had worn the gloss off sacred history. Still, he suspected the Daughters of the Texas Republic of cranking down the thermostat at least two degrees annually, so that the mere act of stepping in from the sun-hammered flags of the Plaza was like plunging into a mountain stream. It was sad when the pull of the arcade drove the keepers of the flame to special effects.
It was a weekday, and the tourist season with its gridlock of history buffs, education-bent parents, and ox-faced children in synthetic coonskin caps was over. A couple of dozen whisperi ... read full excerpt from Something Borrowed, Something Black ebook
