11th-century Japan. A professor at the Imperial University is being blackmailed and Akitada Sugawara is asked to investigate the situation. Chafing under his dull assignments as a clerk at the Ministry of Justice, Akitada welcomes the chance work undercover as a visiting lecturer, but is soon drawn into a net of gossip, petty rivalry, and murder as he struggles to help his old friend and mentor, Professor Hirata. Adding to his troubles, one of Akitada's youngest and noblest students, Lord Minamoto, approaches him with the strange story of his grandfather's disappearance in a mountain temple and his sister's forced marriage to Lord Sakanoue, the boy's hated guardian. Lord Minamoto does not believe the pious tale of his grandfather's miraculous transfiguration, and asks Akitada for help in solving this mystery.
Plunging into a dangerous investigation of conspiracy among high-ranking nobles, Akitada must help the young lord, all the while gathering clues to help save his old mentor before it is too late.
