SHOPPING NEIGHBORHOODS
People are quick to tell you how much they looooooove San
Francisco. In reality, it's the various villages of the city that are
unique and memorable, the lovable parts. If you don't get out
into these areas, you haven't really tasted San Francisco. And
sourdough never tasted this good.
As far as I'm concerned, you can skip some of the most basic
touristy areas-and shop Union Square with the understanding
that it's there, it's easy, and it's without charm. Permission
granted to think of Fillmore Street as the heart of the best part
of San Francisco. See below for why. And the Haight? Even
our 20-something reporters haighted it. On the other hand, in
an attempt to be evenhanded, I then sent some local 20-somethings
over-Return to Haight, we'll call the sequel-and they
loved it. Go figure. But with or without Haight-Ashbury,
there's still plenty to prowl. And, I think, several surprises.
