Multimedia Signal Processing
Theory and Applications in Speech, Music and Communications
Chapter One
Introduction
Signal processing provides the theory, the methods and the tools for such purposes as the analysis and
modelling of signals, classification and recognition of patterns, extraction of information from signals,
synthesis and morphing of signals - morphing is creating a new voice or image out of the existing
samples. Signal processing is concerned with the modelling, extraction, communication and utilisation
of information patterns and structures in a signal process.
Applications of signal processing methods are very wide and include audio hi-fi, TV and radio,
cellular mobile phones, voice recognition, vision, antenna arrays, radar, sonar, geophysical exploration,
medical electronics, bio-medical signal processing, physics and in general any system that is concerned
with the communication or processing and retrieval of information. Signal processing plays a central
role in the development of the new generations of mobile telecommunication and intelligent automatio ... read full excerpt from Multimedia Signal Processing: Theory and Applications in Speech, Music and Communications ebook
