For the most part, you'll find the same ebooks at each virtual online ebook store, just differences in price. Happily, I found the Diesel eBook download store to be the exception to the rule. Not only did they have most of the titles I've found at other sites online, they had a nice selection I hadn't seen anywhere else, in particular, the complete collection of original Sherlock Holmes novels all in one compendium, and in Palm eReader format, just how I like.

Music Theory For Dummies
An indispensable guide for music students, musicians, and music lovers

For people who want a deeper understanding and appreciation of music, or who want to do their own composing and arranging, a basic grounding in music theory is essential. Written for the nearly 30,000 college and graduate music students as well as working musicians and serious music buffs, this hands-on guide explains music theory concepts in plain English-from scales, intervals, tempos, and dynamics to chord progressions, phrasing, harmonizing, and arranging-and demonstrates how to apply them in compositions ranging from pop and rock to jazz and classical. The book includes a CD that demonstrates music theory concepts and provides examples of the way sounds and tempos can be mixed and matched for a variety of musical experiences.

Note: CD-ROM/DVD and other supplementary materials are not included as part of eBook file.

Music Theory For Dummies

Chapter One

What Is Music Theory Anyway?

In This Chapter

* Understanding the value of music theory

* Checking out a bit of music history

* Getting to know a few theorists

* Finding out why the piano is so central

One of the most important things to remember about music theory is that music came first. Music existed for thousands of years before theory came along to explain what people were trying to accomplish by pounding on their drums. So, don't ever think that you can't be a good musician just because you've never taken a theory class. In fact, if you are a good musician, you already know a lot of theory. You just may not know the words or scientific formulas for what you're doing.

The concepts and rules that make up music theory are very much like the grammatical rules that govern written language - which also came along after people had successfully learned how to talk to one another. Just as being able to transcribe language made it possible for people far away to "hear" conversations and stories the ... read full excerpt from Music Theory For Dummies ebook
