Although there has been an increasing awareness of problem substance use in clients with severe mental health problems (that is, "dual diagnosis"), it continues to be underrecognised in the psychiatric population. Even when treatment providers correctly identify substance misuse, the treatment response has often been inappropriate and ineffective.
