1.1 The destination
The goal of this book is to organize the system of fire and buildings in a way that explains
fire performance. The understanding that evolves during a performance evaluation will help
professionals who work in the building industry make better decisions and communicate more
effectively with others.
The procedures described in this book can be used for any existing or proposed new building
involving any code, standard, or regulatory requirements. In addition to being applicable to any
building size or use, the framework for analysis and evaluation procedures may also be adapted
to ships, tunnels, and mass transport systems.
