People of color, including those of multiracial and multiethnic heritage,
represent an increasing proportion of the U.S. population (Jones & Smith,
2001; U.S. Census Bureau, 2003). According to the 2000 U.S. Census (U.S.
Census Bureau, 2003), approximately 40% of the nation's population consists
of people of color (Jones & Smith, 2001). The landscape of racial and
ethnic diversity across the United States indicates particularly high cultural
diversity in coastal and border states, especially California, Texas,
Arizona, New Mexico, Washington, Florida, New York, and Louisiana,
and a general growth in cultural diversity in the midwestern, northwestern,
