The beginning teacher plans appropriate activities for all children based on research and principles of
learning mathematics.
Much research has been done on learning mathematics. Understanding Piaget's stages of cognitive development helps
teachers develop stage-appropriate exercises for students. Piaget's stages of cognitive development are sensorimotor,
pre-operational, concrete operational, and formal operational.
1. The sensorimotor stage (usually from birth to about two and one-half years of age), involves making
sense of the world through their senses and their motoring abilities. This child begins to grasp the concept that
