When thirteen-year-old Jacquelyn "Jack" Fletcher moves in with her elderly aunt, she thinks there isn't much to do in the sleepy island town besides walk on the beach. Then she meets boy-genius, Murphy Goldstein. Despite the unpleasant feeling growing in the pit of her stomach, Jack lets Murphy persuade her to go exploring with him at Penley Hall, an abandoned pre-Civil War mansion.

Jack, Murphy, and their friend, Tobias Rue, sneak onto the property and find a hopelessly tangled overgrowth that has been untouched for generations. The massive estate reeks of death and decay. Jack balks at venturing any further, but an unlocked house door is too tempting. Armed with flashlights and reckless determination, the three investigate.

During their exploration of the expansive grounds, Murphy, Jack, and Tobias catch glimpses of an emaciated creature in a white robe that darts in and out among the trees, shrieking and moaning. Jack has seen enough, but the boys are intrigued. Could it be the ghost of Virginia Penley, the young woman who mysteriously died on the property more than forty years before? Or is it something even more sinister-something better left alone?
