Though these short stories primarily concern the respective descents of various individuals into madness, they are likewise intended to call into question the nature of reality and explore the human condition. Other key themes addressed are those of isolation and loss. Thoreau once claimed "most men led lives of quiet desperation"; this work endeavors to convey that desperation and in so doing aid the reader in overcoming it, provided he refrain from holding this book to the intransigent standards by which he may be accustomed to holding more conventional modes of fiction. Plot is of no consequence; there is no resolution. A child blithely looks on as his mother swallows a fly. Men ignore their wives clamoring to be let out of their cellars. There are lunatics on the subways, in flats on the outskirts of town, nestled in our skins. Oblivious, we tread a very fine line . and now teeter on the brink of crossing it.
