1 It is a sunny, clear day outside, almost hot, and a slight breeze comes through the
room from the front door. We sit at the table and talk. As is usual in an Indian household,
food preparation had begun as soon as we arrived and now there is the snap of
potatoes frying in the black skillet, the sweet smell of white bread overwhelming even
the grease, and the welcome black coffee. A ringer washer stands against the wall of
the kitchen, and the counter space is taken up with dishes, pans, and boxes of food.
2 I am asked if I still read books and I admit that I do. Reading is not "traditional,"
and education has long been suspect in communities that were broken, in part, by that
system, but we laugh at my confession because a television set plays in the next room.
