On February 17, 2009, analog television broadcasting in the United States will end. As of that date, all television stations will switch to digital TV broadcasts -- effectively making obsolete every analog television set in the country.
What do you need to do to keep watching television after the switch to digital? Do you need to buy a new television set? If so, what kind of set? Do you need a fancy high definition TV? Or is there a way to make your old TV still work with the new digital broadcasts? And what is digital television, anyway?
These are just a few of the questions consumers are asking as the switch to digital TV approaches. Confusion abounds; people don't know what they have to do or what they can do. Many people think they have to upgrade to expensive high definition TVs. (They don't.) Others think they need to switch to cable or satellite television. (They don't -- although that may be a good ieda.) Still others think they don't have to do anything. (They're probably wrong -- but maybe not.)
The confusion goes both ways. A recent Government Accountability Office report notes that 45% those who are at risk to lose their television signals -- about 10 million households -- have no plans on how to deal with the situation. (Hispanic households are twice as likely to be unprepared as other households.) On the other hand, 30% of households who already have digital reception think they have to buy new equipment to deal with the transition -- which they don't.
