The Student's Guide to Marching is an outstanding introduction to the art of marching band. The material is primarly for students but as a parent of a high school student in marching band I was able to get a better appreciation for the activity and the amount of mental and physical effort involved. Since purchasing the book I've looked for other similar resources and haven't been able to find any that discusses the topic with the same compactness and pragmatism.
