Islam & Muslims
In light of the War in Iraq, diplomatic tensions between the U.S. and other Middle Eastern nations, and the increasing presence of Muslims in Western societies, the need to understand Islam and Muslims has never been greater. Much of the hostility between the Middle East and the West is bred from ignorance and misrepresentation of the cultural and religious beliefs of both regions. Thus, Islam & Muslims introduces Western readers not only to the fundamentals of Islam, but to how the Islamic religion influences, to varying degrees, cultural practices, gender perceptions, day-to-day activities, and many other elements of Muslim life. Sedgwick addresses everything from Islamic perceptions of God to marriage, prayer, and politics, as well as the underlying reasons for Islam's conflict with the West. Islam & Muslims draws from the author's personal experience living, teaching, and studying in the Middle East. It breaks down stereotypes, presenting individual Muslims (traditional or modern, devout or barely observant) from a fact-driven, sensitive, and unbiased point of view. Dr. Mark Sedgwick is an associate professor of Arab history, culture, and society in the Faculty of Theology at the University of Aarhus, Denmark. A former professor at the American University in Cairo, Egypt, he was born in London, England, and educated at Oxford University. He is the author of Sufism: The Essentials; Against the Modern World: Traditionalism and the Secret Intellectual History of the Twentieth Century; and Saints and Sons: The Making and Remaking of the Rashidi Ahmadi Sufi Order, 1799-2000; and has been translated into several languages.
