Most Americans know that George W. Bush is not an environmentalist. Unlike
more than 70 percent of the American public, he cannot bring himself to
use the "e" word to describe himself. (Even Vice President Dick Cheney
thinks of himself as "a pretty good environmentalist, though the Sierra
Club may not agree with that.") In truth most Americans do not trust
Republican politicians on the environment, and they certainly do not trust
oilmen. Bush is both. His polling numbers on protecting clean air, water
and wild places have remained consistently poor.
