For over 50 years, evident in cookie-cutter houses, wide, treeless, sidewalk-free roadways, mindlessly curving culde sacs and a streetscape of garage doors, urban growth, also known as urban sprawl has been extremely poorly managed. As a result urban design and planning has become one of the major areas of interest and discussion in architecture today. This popular and influential work, translated here into English for the first time, was the first study of the structure and form of urban design generated by the Urban Planning unit of the University of Versailles, France. The book demonstrates how our cities have got into problems resulting from the erosion of the street and block structure. It links this to changes in economic and social structures via a selection of drawings and so provides easy graphic access to a number of examples of urban form which are now being promoted as solutions to urban design problems.
