PLC Programming for Industrial Automation provides a basic, yet comprehensive, introduction to the subject of PLC programming for both mechanical and electrical engineering students. It is well written, easy to follow and contains many programming examples to reinforce understanding of the programming theory. The student is led from the absolute basics of ladder logic programming all the way through to complex sequences with parallel and selective branching. The programming is taught in a generic style which can readily be applied to any make and model of PLC. The author uses the TriLogi PLC simulator which the student can download free of charge from the internet.

This is a good book to start your training on Smart PLCs with the capability to have extended functions added by a programming language. This book uses the TriAngle Research family of PLCs as the platform to train basic ladder logic - plus basic programming, which this series of PLCs can use to make decisions. You can download a full simulator from the TRI-PLC web site and test every example given. This book has a good introduction, but I found the insturctor/writer quickly jumps ahead once a subject is lightly covered, which requires you to review the TRI-PLC web site to download code examples which provide more detailed examples. This book + the simulator available online + example code on TRI web page (that can be downloaded) running on the simulator make a good learning enviroment.
