The Fuhrer's Gold
Major James S. Miller, United States Army Air Force, becomes America's first ace at the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor. During the conflict he suffers a demoralizing setback that threatens to ruin his career. By early 1943, booze, a painful divorce, and hard luck become his wingmen and ruin any hope of recovering his glory days as an ace pilot. Oberstleutnant Axel Voss is undeniably the German Luftwaffe's leading ace. His reputation for impatience toward cowardice and complacency precede him. Yet it is his arrogant disdain for regulations that overshadow his near flawless war record. His ego and ruthlessness sabotage his chance to satisfy his lust for flying, and killing his opponents. A long time, high-ranking friend in the US Army Air Force arranges a small command for Miller-a final opportunity to redeem himself. The newly formed 231st Squadron is based on the coast of Liberia and assigned to hunt for German U-boats in the Atlantic. Left with an abandoned airfield and derelict aircraft, Miller soon realizes that his assignment is leading an unimportant command unlikely to see combat. Determined to do well, Miller leads his crew into repairing and rebuilding the air base and airplanes. Voss is sent to a secret base with pristine aircraft, no discipline or regimen, and access to personal amenities not found in other commands. With no purpose other than to sit back and enjoy the rest of the war in leisure, Voss takes to the skies- bathing himself in the euphoria of flight. A chance meeting of the two aces leads to an adrenaline-filled encounter with heart- stopping action. His base no longer a secret, Voss must protect its purpose, while Miller must destroy it, if necessary. Fiercely pitted against each other, the small opposing forces must fend for themselves while competing to possess the Fuhrer's gold. A gripping, yet heartwarming tale of commitment, courage, and raw nerve will leave the reader spellbound to the end.
