Evaluation for Continuing Education
A Comprehensive Guide to Success
Chapter One
Overview
Before I offer useful suggestions about strengthening your evaluation,
consider some of the questions about evaluation that you
now care about. Why do you want to enhance your evaluation
expertise? How might this book help?
An evaluation project usually depends on contributions from several
people with a stake in the effectiveness of the educational program.
Such stakeholders include learners, instructors, coordinators,
policy makers, and funders. As noted in the Preface, each stakeholder
makes evaluative judgments, however informal. Each does so
from his or her current level of expertise regarding evaluation. The
stakeholder typically engages in evaluation in relation to decisions
about what to accomplish and how to do so. Clarifying the expertise
and expectations of your main stakeholders can help you decide on
the focus of a specific evaluation.
