Neither were the survivors . . .Author's notes: The specific exploration in which the main character of this story is involved was inspired by the book Pale Ink by Henriette Mertz, and its suggestion that western North America had been systematically explored by the Chinese during the semi-legendary Hsia Dynasty. Specifically there are four journeys described whose geography seems to match sites in Alaska, Canada, and the Rockies. (I was quite taken by the idea when I first read the book; alas, Mertz went on to write a book "proving" that the Odyssey takes place in America--so my faith in her research and judgment has seriously declined!)The hill-top museum mentioned in the story derives from my own experience. I lived for eight years in the St. Stanislaus Jesuit Museum (who better than a Protestant preacher's son, raised in a church parsonage, to keep an eye on a museum of religious artifacts?) near St. Louis. The lightning incidents were very frequent.The underlying issue of the story is the question many of our day-dreams spring from. How would I do in an emergency, if everything depended on me?
