We recommend you download one of our test eBooks to make sure you have the right settings on your computer.

For the most part, you'll find the same ebooks at each virtual online ebookstore, just differences in price. Happily, I found Diesel-eBooks to be the exception to the rule. Not only did they have most of the titles I've found at other sites online, they had a nice selection I hadn't seen anywhere else, in particular, the complete collection of original Sherlock Holmes novels all in one compendium, and in Palm eReader format, just how I like.

Death of an Irish Lass, The
The dead woman is an enigma –– a local lass who emigrated to America some years back, now perched atop a seven–hundred–foot cliff high above the pounding Irish surf . . . with two passports, a pistol, and $27,000 U.S. dollars in her coat pocket. The brutality of May Quirk's murder –– along with the accompanying death of her unborn child –– haunts Chief Superintendent Peter McGarr of the Special Crimes Unit. What was it that brought her home to County Clare to die? McGarr is determined to find out, as his investigation carries him into the twisted core of a deadly conspiracy centered around money, madness, and lethal politics . . . and leads him far from his own home to a dark place where a dedicated Irish policeman is easy prey.

Chapter One

On the Cliffs near the Wide Ocean

"I was after having a bit of a gargle, sir. Truth is, I was under the gaff. I thought I'd pull the car in off the road and put the public out of danger. I tried to get in close to the wall. I guess I was worse off than I thought." He pointed to the left side of the new Jaguar sedan. The paint was torn down the length, showing bright sheet metal below the cream-colored lacquer. The rear fender was crushed.

"Then I felt a need."

McGarr glanced at the man. The euphemism seemed odd coming from him. He was a Dublin dance hall owner, but McGarr knew better. Barry Hanly was a type -- he'd trade in anything that promised a fast profit. He had said he was forty-two. To McGarr, Hanly looked fifty-two. He was fat and pasty. The only chins that he had were unnecessary. Even the expensive three-piece blue suit and cashmere chesterfield coat couldn't hide the collapse of his upper body. McGarr had grown up with and, later, had had to arrest dozens of men like Hanly. They had spent so much energy trying to avoid real work they were used up befo ... read full excerpt from Death of an Irish Lass, The ebook
