Chapter One
"Leave Molly Claire alone!" her mother screamed.
Outside the shack, thunder raged, and rain slashed
the windows. Lightning's silver flash painted the face of the
man leering down at Molly Claire. She was only a child, too
small to fight him as he held her hands with one of his, his
other prowling in places she didn't want him to touch.
"Don't you touch my Molly Claire," her mother was
yelling, hitting the man. He shoved her away. Another man
pushed open the door. He stood outlined by a bolt of lightning,
the wind tearing at his hair. Then the storm was inside
the shack, mixed with terrible, primitive grunts of two big
men fighting savagely. Her mother clawed Molly Claire into
a corner and huddled protectively over her.
One man staggered and slumped and the other kept hitting
and kicking him.
The man, who said he'd come back for her, turned; he
came toward Molly Claire and her mother. He'd hurt her
mother before, and now her face was bruised and swollen.
