Two and a half years later
"Where are you, Cody?"
Spence Gerhard's question echoed, unanswered in the forest's
misty silence. Alone in the vast and rugged Washington
state Cascade Mountains near Snoqualmie Pass, he cautiously
stepped over the rocks and gray boulders of the mountain.
He moved down the canyon's steep incline, through the
layers of mist, waiting for the answering call of a child --
instead, a heavy silence shrouded the mountains ...
Above him, on I-90, the sound of passing traffic echoed
eerily. That December, two and a half years ago, snow had
blanketed the mountains ...
And then a pickup had flown over the edge of that high
mountain road. The bodies of Spence's sister, Traci, and her
ex-husband had been discovered within the crumpled pickup
at the bottom of the canyon. A new blanket of snow had gently
covered the wreckage, making the recovery of the adults'
bodies even more difficult.
But the body of Spence's nephew, Cody, had never been
found.
