If you notice any site errors or have an idea for our eBook store, we'd love to hear it no matter how small.

Your first time?
We recommend you download one of our test eBooks to make sure you have the right settings on your computer.

For the most part, you'll find the same ebooks at each virtual online ebook store, just differences in price. Happily, I found the Diesel eBook download store to be the exception to the rule. Not only did they have most of the titles I've found at other sites online, they had a nice selection I hadn't seen anywhere else, in particular, the complete collection of original Sherlock Holmes novels all in one compendium, and in Palm eReader format, just how I like.

"Ebook Extra 1: A Conversation with Michael Crichton, Author of NEXT Ebook Extra 2: Michael Crichton Next Audio Interview Ebook Extra 3: This Essay Breaks the Law by Michael Crichton

Is a loved one missing some body parts? Are blondes becoming extinct? Is everyone at your dinner table of the same species? Humans and chimpanzees differ in only 400 genes; is that why a chimp fetus resembles a human being? And should that worry us? There's a new genetic cure for drug addiction—is it worse than the disease?

We live in a time of momentous scientific leaps, a time when it's possible to sell our eggs and sperm online for thousands of dollars and to test our spouses for genetic maladies.

We live in a time when one fifth of all our genes are owned by someone else, and an unsuspecting person and his family can be pursued cross-country because they happen to have certain valuable genes within their chromosomes . . .

Devilishly clever, Next blends fact and fiction into a breathless tale of a new world where nothing is what it seems and a set of new possibilities can open at every turn.

Next challenges our sense of reality and notions of morality. Balancing the comic and the bizarre with the genuinely frightening and disturbing, Next shatters our assumptions and reveals shocking new choices where we least expect.

The future is closer than you think.

Chapter One

Division 48 of Los Angeles Superior Court was a wood-paneled room dominated by the great seal of the state of California. The room was small and had a tawdry feeling. The reddish carpet was frayed and streaked with dirt. The wood veneer on the witness stand was chipped, and one of the fluorescent lights was out, leaving the jury box darker than the rest of the room. The jurors themselves were dressed casually, in jeans and short-sleeve shirts. The judge's chair squeaked whenever the Honorable Davis Pike turned away to glance at his laptop, which he did often throughout the day. Alex Burnet suspected he was checking his e-mail or his stocks.

All in all, this courtroom seemed an odd place to litigate complex issues of biotechnology, but that was what they had been doing for the past two weeks in Frank M. Burnet v. Regents of the University of California.

Alex was thirty-two, a successful litigator, a junior partner in her law firm. She sat at the plaintiff's table with the other members of her father's legal team, and watched as her father took the witness stand. Although she smiled reassuringly, ... read full excerpt from: Next ebook

Crichton never stops to entertain in this book. It is an eye opener over the research that has been and is beeing done on genetics. The study of human genome is the phocus of many big pharmaceutical companies. Big giants who are on a mission to patent all the human genes in order to suck the blood of every human on earth. Michael is trying to make a point that no entity on earth can own something in the human body, he even started a petition on his website to urge people to convey their concerns about patenting genes to their congressmen. I urge everyone to read this book and participate in Michael cry to unpatent the already patented genes and stop that absurdness from continuing on.
