Romance title: Mr. Cavendish, I Presume

Amelia Willoughby has been engaged to the Duke of Wyndham for as long as she can remember. Literally. A mere six months old when the contracts were signed, she has spent the rest of her life waiting. And waiting. And waiting . . . for Thomas Cavendish, the oh-so-lofty duke, to finally get around to marrying her. But as she watches him from afar, she has a sneaking suspicion that he never thinks about her at all . . .

It's true. He doesn't. Thomas rather likes having a fiancée—all the better to keep the husband-hunters at bay—and he does intend to marry her . . . eventually. But just when he begins to realize that his bride might be something more than convenient, Thomas's world is rocked by the arrival of his long-lost cousin, who may or may not be the true Duke of Wyndham. And if Thomas is not the duke, then he's not engaged to Amelia. Which is the cruelest joke of all, because this arrogant and illustrious duke has made the mistake of falling in love . . . with his own fiancée!

Mr. Cavendish, I Presume

Chapter One

It was a crime that Amelia Willoughby was not married.

At least that was what her mother said. Amelia—or more correctly, Lady Amelia—was the second daughter of the Earl of Crowland, so no one could fault her bloodlines. Her appearance was more than passable, if one's taste ran toward wholesome English roses, which, fortunately for Amelia, most of the ton's did.

Her hair was a respectable shade of medium blond, her eyes a grayish sort of greenish color, and her skin clear and even, so long as she remembered to stay out of the sun. (Freckles were not Lady Amelia's friend.)

She was also, as her mother liked to catalogue, of adequate intelligence, able to play the pianoforte and paint watercolors, and (and here was where her mother punctuated the speech with an enthusiastic flourish) in possession of all of her teeth.

Even better, the aforementioned teeth were perfectly straight, which could not be said of Jacinda Lennox, who had made the match of 1818, neatly landing the Marquis of Beresford. (But not, as frequently reported by Jacinda Lennox's mot ... read full excerpt from Mr. Cavendish, I Presume ebook

Thoroughly disagree with the other reviews. It is very clever of Quinn to show the same story from the points of view of two sets of lovers. You can read both and compare scenes that intersect in both and find what the other person was thinking at the same time. I personally thought 'Mr. Cavendish' was vastly superior to 'Lost Duke' - there is more passion in the love story and the hero, Thomas, goes thru an incredible arc in character development - he learns humility and humanity and true love prevails.

I was very disapointed. It is exactly the same story than The Lost Duke of Wyndham only with the veiw of other caracters. I had the feeling that I paid 2 times the ssame book.

I was a little disappointed that the author had this book overlap The Lost Duke of Wyndham as much as it did. I felt like a lot of the story was repetition.

Julia Quinn has done a decent job in writing this novel. The story and its plot are definitely interesting, but personally, I didn't become attached to the characters that much. These two people have known each other for quite a few years and yet they didn't have even a bit of attraction to each other. Now, all of a sudden, they do. Even if you can get by that, their love doesn't seem that believable throughout the novel. That spark that makes romance novels sizzle is missing.

I was not convinced by the whole storyline. They knew each other a long time and then suddenly there was this mutual attraction!!I also found the other romance in the background distracting esp as it was just hinted at and then is in another book although occurs during this story.
