A Duke of Her Own

Chapter One

London
1888

Gentlewoman of noble birth offers to chaperone genteel American lady in need of social guidance. References provided. Send inquiry to the attention of Lady Louisa Wentworth, in care of this publication.

The Lady's Quarterly Review

"What in the devil is this?"

Lady Louisa Wentworth jerked her head back slightly to avoid having her nose bruised by the publication her brother was flapping furiously in front of her face. She'd been enjoying her usual breakfast of porridge laced with butter, milk, and an abundance of sugar before he'd come storming into the morning dining room as though he were some avenging angel. Delicately pressing her linen napkin to each corner of her mouth, she summoned up every ounce of fortitude within her in order to confront his belligerence with serenity.

"It appears to be a magazine," she said.

"Not this!" he shouted, frantically jerking the periodical up and down, before slamming it on the table. He pressed a blunt-tipped finger beneath a particular ... read full excerpt from: A Duke of Her Own ebook

4 out of 5 stars A great read! 07/22/2009

Set in the Victorian era rather than the Regency era, this is a great story about a duke needing to marry an heiress, but ends up falling in love with the poor sister of his friend. I found it quite a touching story, the characters likeable and the scandal sufficiently shocking! Heath writes in a style that is easy to read and keeps the reader captivated. I recommend this book to any lover of historical romances!

This was an unexpected surprise. I thought that the act of "compromising" would not actually be an intimate act. This story continued to surprise me, especially the fact that the main characters did not become rich at the end. This aspect actually endeared me to the story even more. I would recommend this story to anyone who small surprises that jump out at the reader.

Lady Louisa decides to go out and earn her living, to help earn some money for heself so she won't be dependent on her brother, the new earl. She decides that working as a gentlewoman who guides two American young women to meet dukes and such will be just right for her, as she is the daughter of an impoverished and deceased earl. The Duke of Hawkhurst has got to marry for money as he is also impoverished. Beautiful Jenny Rose is one of the wealthy young women on the market for a title to marry, but Louisa does not approve of him...he's a rake, and she knows him well. He is her brothers best friend and she has seen him drunk and her brother would share some of their exploits when he came home drunk. Her permission must be granted in order for Hawk to purse Jenny. To save Jenny's reputation, she interferes. Things never work out the way they are supposed to and due to a "slight" discretion, Louisa finds herself married to Hawk. THEN she has to meet his family and she learns why he must marry money. There were more young men after Jenny and none of them were deemed acceptable by Louisa. One of them is her own brother. This is a novel about love, betrayal and acceptence. I loved reading it and I think you will, too.
