Chapter One

Caroline Clemens pasted a smile on her face as she gazed belligerently over the assembled company.

Her insides cramped with fear, but she did not let her discomfort show on her face. At any sign of weakness, the pack would race in for the kill. They did not deserve the satisfaction of watching her crumble. She would outface all the malicious gossip from those old spinsters who had always envied her, and all the false condolences from pretend friends who had come to crow over her misfortune.

Heaven help her, but tonight she could even bear the unfeigned sympathy of the handful of people who genuinely loved her.

She cast her eyes over the sea of color in front of her, looking for the red and gold jacket of Captain Bellamy. He, at least, loved her well. The small matter of her family's bankruptcy would not matter to him a whit. Only last week, when the rumors of her family's financial troubles were starting to make the rounds, he had sworn to her that he would love her even if she were a pauper.

The book got me into it right away. I love when books do that. I was a little disappointed that it wasn't longer, but it's okay. Honestly though, the end was what really cinched the book for me. I actually got a little choked up. Overall, I'm extremely pleased with the read.

Although I'm almost never as impressed as I would like to be with erotic romances, as they tend to be either not hot enough, or the story falls through in favor of the sex, this one was definitely better than most. From the first, the reader feels for the way that Caroline's world is falling apart. And though the first sex scene takes place mere pages into the story, the author somehow manages to make it make sense. I enjoyed the intensely sexual and hedonistic attitude of Dominic Savage (though, oh! the name), and his unrepentant desire to have Caroline as his mistress was a nice change from wishy-washy characters in historicals where the author tries to reconcile modern and historical sensibilities to the detriment of the hero. I liked the sex scenes, though they were perhaps not as adventurous as they might have been, but was a bit disappointed (as always) with the core conflict: she both leaves and returns to Dominic a bit too easily to really satisfy the roadblock the author has put in the way of their happiness. However, this was an altogether enjoyable read and I would recommend it as well as the next in the Clemens family series.
