We recommend you download one of our test eBooks to make sure you have the right settings on your computer.

For the most part, you'll find the same ebooks at each virtual online ebook store, just differences in price. Happily, I found the Diesel eBook download store to be the exception to the rule. Not only did they have most of the titles I've found at other sites online, they had a nice selection I hadn't seen anywhere else, in particular, the complete collection of original Sherlock Holmes novels all in one compendium, and in Palm eReader format, just how I like.

The Art of Power
Power is one of the central issues in our lives. From work to personal relationships, the struggle for power plays a pivotal role and more often than not prevents us from attaining freedom and happiness. The bottom–line mentality in our culture seeps unnoticed into every other part of our lives. Thich Nhat Hanh illustrates how our current understanding of power leads us on a never ending search for external markers like job title or salary. This me–first approach to life may have originated in the business world, but the stress, fear, and anxiety it causes are being felt by all of us everyday. Turning the conventional understanding on its head, Thich Nhat Hanh teaches us that true power comes from within and that what we seek we already have. With colorful anecdotes, precise language, and concrete practices, this book will have an important and lasting legacy on how we understand our culture and choose to live our lives.

The Art of Power

Chapter One

True Power

Frederick was by conventional standards a powerful man. He was a financially successful executive who prided himself on his high ideals. Yet he was unable to really be there for himself, his wife, Claudia, or their two young sons. He was filled with an energy that always pushed him to do more, be better, and focus on the future. When his youngest son came to him, smiling, to show him a picture he had drawn, Frederick was so absorbed in his thoughts and worries about his work that he didn't really see his son as precious, a miracle of life. When he came home from work and hugged Claudia, he wasn't fully present. He tried, but he wasn't really there. Claudia and the children felt his absence.

At first, Claudia had supported Frederick and his career completely. She was proud to be his wife, and she took a lot of pleasure in organizing receptions and other social events. Like him, she was committed to the idea that getting ahead, having a bigger salary and a larger home, would increase their happiness. She listened to him to understand his difficulties. Sometimes they would sta ... read full excerpt from: The Art of Power ebook

Longtime readers of Thich Nhat Hanh will recognize many of the themes that he brings to bear in this perceptive look at power in human affairs. What is the purpose of seeking power, he asks, if not to secure our happiness in the face of an uncertain life? Position, wealth, and fame come and go, and can as easily become a burden as a blessing. Real happiness, he asserts, is built on the cultivation of mindfulness and insight - giving attention to life in the present moment and looking deeply into the nature of things as they are. Life lived this way yields both peace of mind and intuitive wisdom for living happily with others as well as with ourselves. I strongly recommend this book as a companion volume to Sakyong Mipham's RULING YOUR WORLD, which covers similar ground from the perspective of Chogyam Trungpa's Shambhala teachings.
