Chapter One They say he killed his first wife."

It was enough to make Lady Olivia Bevelstoke cease stirring her tea. "Who?" she asked, since the truth was, she hadn't been listening.

"Sir Harry Valentine. Your new neighbor."

Olivia took a hard look at Anne Buxton, and then at Mary Cadogan, who was nodding her head in agreement. "You must be joking," she said, although she knew quite well that Anne would never joke about something like that. Gossip was her lifeblood.

"No, he really is your new neighbor," put in Philomena Waincliff.

Olivia took a sip of her tea, mostly so that she would have time to keep her face free of its desired expression, which was a cross between unabashed exasperation and disbelief. "I meant that she must be joking that he killed someone," she said, with more patience than she was generally given credit for.

"Oh." Philomena picked up a biscuit. "Sorry."

"I know I heard that he killed his fiancée," Anne insisted.

"If he killed someone, he'd be in gaol," Olivia pointed out.

Not one of her best creations as the plot is a little unbelievable and the character's build-up to falling in love is not as inspired as some of her earlier works. Still there are some very funny scenes that die-hard fans will recognise and enjoy. Worth a read.

Twitched with anticipation the first time I read the book description. Read the first character excerpt with delight and hungry eyes, anxious for the complete novel. But sadly, I found it lacking and incomparable with her earlier novels, namely The Secret Diaries of Miranda Cheever. In my opinion, it fell short of utterly romantic and there was no grand gesture made by either party. I did, however, laugh hysterically for at least 4 minutes whilst reading through a page of dialogue and smiled a few times during moments of others. Enjoyable enough read! If you’re a die-hard JQ fan, it’s a must buy. ALSO…I marked this book on my calendar 40 days in advance. Took an hour lunch that Tuesday it was released and drove to B&N to snag a copy; BUT THEY DIDN’T HAVE IT OUT ON THE SHELVES YET! I swore to myself that that was the last time I’ll ever consider B&N for products and I’ve kept my promise! DIESEL provides at outstanding prices, the same books with an HASSLE FREE attitude and the best part, I don’t have to waste my time and gas driving to the book store.

What Happens in London, while not my favorite Julia Quinn novel, is pretty good. I enjoyed learning what happens to blunt Olivia Bevelstoke (Secret Diaries of Miranda Cheever) who becomes fast friends with Sir Harry Valentine. Both the characters are likeable, the story line is fresh with a new twist that introduces a Russian prince into London society. Since this is a romance, and not a mystery it is not surprising that the intrigue is a little flimsy. I did love the dynamic between Harry and Olivia, and that the reader doesn't have to deal with too much self-doubt and the small misunderstanding lasts for merely a few short pages. I have a hard time when the characters are constantly belittling themselves and do not trust that they deserved to be loved or are loved, or whatever. Quinn doesn't do this to the reader in this book, and that is fabulous news for us all. Olivia is an interesting girl with no head for nonsense, really... I've enjoyed other heroes more, but Harry is perfectly acceptable. And he speaks Russian and French. The "mystery" of the novel sometimes detracts from the romance...but that's OK too.
