What Would God's Pottery Do?
1.

YOUR PARENTS

Hasn’t everyone said that to their dad at some point?

Look, if even Jesus had parent issues, then we know it’s going to be a challenge for everyone. The parent--Teen relationship is one of the oldest in recorded history, but that doesn’t mean anyone has figured out exactly how to do it! We know that to you Teens, parents can sometimes feel like your worst enemies. Oh, the irony! Because all they want is to be your best friends.

That’s because you won’t let them be!

Look, your parents are probably “lame.” We bet they don’t know who SisQó is. And they definitely don’t know how to blog! But they are also two of the few people in your entire life who will love you unconditionally, no matter what (unless you really mess up).

You may be young and lazy, but don’t wait too long to forge this special bond with your parents. Just as with a 401(k) or a relationship with Christ, it’s never too late, but certainly more effective the earlier you start.

Our first chapter is all about learning to see your parents not as the strict disciplinarians who rule your every move, but rather as the friendly disciplinarians who would like nothing more than to treat you as an adult, if only you’d stop acting so immature and making such terrible decisions. Are you ready to set sail with us?

Terrific! All aboard the Relation Ship!

Your Parents Have Value

If that makes you laugh, do us a favor and put down this book, have your laugh, and pick up this book again when you’re ready to get serious. There will be plenty of properly labeled occasions to laugh, but this is a very serious point we’re making.

The biggest mistake Teens make when dealing with their parents is thinking that they have nothing to offer the Youth in today’s world. The truth is, your parents can actually be a valuable resource for you Teens.1 For example, who else is going to tell you about how much better things were when they were young?

You may feel like the Youth today have access to all sorts of things now that your parents never had (computers, extreme sports, body implants). But do you realize how many things your parents had that you can no longer have?

Imagine the stories your parents could tell you about these obsolete cultural elements, if only you would let them! You see your parents as a source of tension and stress; try to see them as a resource of tension and stress.

A Short History of Parent--Teen Relations

The parent--Teen bond has actually come a long way since the Dawn of Man. In today’s modern world, we are closer than ever to perfecting the relationship between father and son, mother and son, and father and daughter.3 Ideally, the parent--Teen bond should be just like a close friendship: two people sharing experiences, learning to respect each other’s wants and needs, and following the judgment of the smarter and more responsible friend (the parent).

You may feel like you’ve got it tough when your folks suspend your AOL account or send your cat to a farm because he vomited a mouse carcass onto the Persian rug, but parent--Teen relations have actually improved a great deal for the Youth over the course of history. Let’s take a brief look at this evolution:

In people were so busy running
