IN THE best of moods, and ready for her second day temping at Petrakos Industries, Maddie bounced on to the bathroom scales and stilled to look hopefully down at the gauge. She winced at the reading. Possibly it hadnâ€™t been a good idea to jump on them. She got off again. Shedding her nightdress and her watch, she reset the weighing machine and stepped on as lightly as possible. Disappointingly, the weight was identical.

â€˜You canâ€™t keep body and soul together on that salad stuff,â€™ old Mrs Evans who lived on the ground floor had opined, when Maddie had joined her and her daughter for a delicious three-course Sunday lunch, complete with all the trimmings, just a couple of days earlier.

Fans of Lynne Graham won't be disappointed. This isn't the best of her works--particularly the ending seemed a little rushed--but it is her standard fare, and it's well-packaged with the particulars of Maddie and Giannis's story. The most interesting bit: Giannis and Maddie have an odd past connection--he was once her dying twin sister's benefactor, back when she was fourteen. Graham's smart and doesn't overplay that connection, but traces of the hero-worship it generated linger well into the book. Overall, a decent read from the always-readable Graham.

Although the plot was pretty predictable, I enjoyed it. The guy always comes around at the end, but Giannis was the type of hero that is predictable, but who reacts in unpredictable ways. He surprised me, more than Maddie.
