The Dying Ground

It's 1989 in Oakland, California, and crack cocaine is on the rise. Between Tiananmen Square, AIDS, George Bush, Howard Beach, and the rise of New Kids on the Block, there is a feeling in the air that the world is changing -- and not for the better. This becomes all the more apparent on a hot October day for Maceo Redfield, a former rising baseball star and current college dropout, when he is told that Billy Crane, a prominent drug dealer and one of his best friends from childhood, has been murdered. As Maceo attempts to learn more about Billy's murder -- mainly to find Felicia Bennett, Billy's girlfriend and the love of Maceo's life -- he gets pulled closer and closer into Billy's world. The repercussions of Maceo's investigation for himself, his family, and his friends are both terrifying and tragic in this very satisfying African-American mystery.
