Chapter One

Gripping the leather handle of her valise, Madeline paused at the back entrance of the Capital Theatre. It had been frightening and yet exhilarating to make her way through London alone. Her ears were assaulted with the noise of carriages, horses, and street sellers, while her nostrils were filled with a confusing mixture of the aromas of manure, animals, and garbage; the yeasty scent of a nearby bakery, and the hot waxen odor of a candle-maker's shop.

Earlier in the day Madeline had pawned the ring Lord Clifton had given her, and the pocket of her dress was filled with the satisfying weight of coins. Wary of pickpockets, she had kept her plain gray cloak wrapped tightly around herself, but no one had seemed inclined to approach her. Now she had arrived at the Capital, and her adventure was about to begin.

Having read and thoroughly enjoyed several books by this author, I must say I was bitterly disappointed by this particular novel. The writing in general is well below par in comparison to her other work; it was often awkward and quite contrived. However, it was the characters whom I felt let this story down the most. Madeline is a completely unlikeable heroine, whose meekness is only rivalled by her utter stupidity. Logan Scott is unappealing and without any sort of charm. Together their romance seems forced and cliched and as a result is terribly dull. I found myself not caring about the outcome at all.

'Because you are mine', is another great book by Lisa Kleypas. It is very great reading, easy going, and romantic with a wonderful story line. I have read many book by Lisa Klaypas and I have to say this one is one of the best, she has ever done. I found that the story of Madeline and Logan was beautiful! Madeline is a fantastic, funny, very lively girl; whereas Logan is very stubborn, talented, all about his theatre grown up man. Their match is extraordinary, full of exiting scenes. It's a must read for all fans of Lisa Kleypas.

One of the best Lisa Kleypas novels that i've read. Trully, I loved all of the characters. There was tremendous chemistry between the lead male and female. And the story line was wonderful, it was long and complex but never faultered. Very Highly Recomended.

Didn't find the characters too interesting in this one. Although the heroine, Madeline, is supposed to be feisty, she seemed pretty insipid to me. I subsequently read "Somewhere I'll Find You", the story of Julia, a secondary character in this one, and her relationship with Logan. Realizing the books were related, I then came back and re-read parts of this one. The story in that prequel was much more compelling - Logan seemed a more interesting and varied character; he seemed to become just a lust-filled generic with this one, with only lip-service paid to the hard-nosed, driven theatre manager that was more fully fleshed out in the other novel - you had to have read the other book to understand and believe the references to his character; hard to know what he saw in Madeline....
