Faefever
Chapter One

The pain, God, the pain! It’s going to splinter my skull!

I clutch my head with wet, stinking hands, determined to hold it together until the inevitable occurs—I pass out.

Nothing compares to the agony the Sinsar Dubh causes me. Each time I get close to it, the same thing happens. I’m immobilized by pain that escalates until I lose consciousness.

Barrons says it’s because the Dark Book and I are point and counterpoint. That it’s so evil, and I’m so good, that it repels me violently. His theory is to “dilute” me somehow, make me a little evil so I can get close to it. I don’t see how making me evil so I can get close enough to pick up an evil book is a good thing. I think I’d probably do evil things with it.

“No,” I whimper, sloshing on my knees in the puddle. “Please . . . no!” Not here, not now! In the past, each time I’d gotten close to the Book, Barrons had been with me, and I’d had the comfort of knowing he wouldn’t let anything too awful happen to my unconscious body. He might tote me around like a divining rod, but I could live with that. Tonight, however, I was alone. The thought of being vulnerable to anyone and anything in Dublin’s streets for even a few moments terrified me. What if I passed out for an hour? What if I fell facedown into the vile puddle I was in, and drowned in mere inches of . . . ugh.

I had to get out of the puddle. I would not die so pathetically.

A wintry wind howled down the street, whipping between buildings, chilling me to the bone. Old newspapers cartwheeled like dirty, sodden tumbleweeds over broken bottles and discarded wrappers and glasses. I flailed in the sewage, scraped at the pavement with my fingernails, left the tips of them broken in gaps between the cobbled stones.

Inch by inch, I clawed my way to drier ground.

It was there—straight ahead of me: the Dark Book. I could feel it, fifty yards from where I scrabbled for purchase. Maybe less. And it wasn’t just a book. Oh, no. It was nothing that simple. It pulsated darkly, charring the edges of my mind.

Why wasn’t I passing out?

Why wouldn’t this pain end?

I felt like I was dying. Saliva flooded my mouth, frothing into foam at my lips. I wanted desperately to throw up but I couldn’t. Even my stomach was locked down by pain.

Moaning, I tried to raise my head. I had to see it. I’d been close to it before, but I’d never seen it. I’d always passed out first. If I wasn’t going to lose consciousness, I had questions I wanted answered. I didn’t even know what it looked like. Who had it? What were they doing with it? Why did I keep having near brushes with it?

Shuddering, I pushed back onto my knees, shoved a hank of sour-smelling hair from my face, and looked.

The street that only moments ago had bustled with tourists, making their merry way from one open pub door to the next, was now scourged clean by the dark, arctic wind. Doors had been slammed, music silenced.

Leaving only me.

And them.

The vision before me was not at all what I’d expected.

A gunman had a huddle of people backed against the wall of a building, a family of tourists,

Well, 2 hours after I bought Bloodfever I came back for more. I couldn't help myself! Faefever is the third installment of Moning's Fever series. I found it a bit disappointing to see the books length was the same as the first two, but never mind that, it's worth the read. In Faefever Mac begins feeling out how to get the upperhand. She definitely gets involved with some darker elements, which as a reader we are unsure whether they will really work in her favour. Reading this book was a bit of battle because our beloved Mac steps from the light into shades of grey. Her character is learning from all the experiences she has with Barrons, V'lane, etc. and because all the powerful characters in Mac's world are closed-off and have personal agendas she becomes somewhat deceitful. Okay a bit of a spoiler alert coming up. The end was a disappointment. There was no resolution and it felt a like the author wrote it that way to ensure a larger wave of readers for the next installment series. As a writer I can't help but see the business side of that ending choice and it bothers me.

Wow! This book kept me on edge. The story just gets better and more mysterious. This is the third installment of the Fever series and next book comes out in August 2009. The waiting is painful! The ending of the book is unexpected and may be a little shocking to some people. I appreciate books that keep me guessing and make me use a little brain power. This entire series certainly fits that bill. I have read the three books three times so far and plan to read them again before the fourth installment is released. They remind me of watching LOST. Always looking for clues and trying to figure out what is going on!

Ever since I've stumbled onto her books, I can't get enough of Ms. Moning! Mac has a lot of spunk and sass but not too much to make her disagreeable. Her encounters with JB and V'Lane only get hotter each time. I'll read it again and again. When's the next in the series?? !

This is the third book in Karen Moning's Fever series and it is pretty intense. Mac continues to search for the dark book and to battle the darkness overtaking Dublin. Both JB and V'lane compete for her attention and loyalty but each also has a dark side that she must contend with. It all comes together on Halloween Night and a desperate attempt to keep the shields between the mortal world and the dark fae strong. This was the strongest book of the series yet, however, they ending was also very disturbing. If I had know how it would end I would have purchased it and then waited until the publication of the fourth book to read it. The cliff hanger is just stunning.

As usual KMM delivers! This book had a crazy and very emotional cliffhanger, definitely not for the faint of heart. I love her stories and Mac has been on such a journey, I look forward to her happy ending. There is quite a bit of development to the story and many twists that will have you at the edge of your seat.
