For the last 2 or 3 years, I had read reviews and excerpts of Ms Holly's novels before actually buying this one. To me, a reader who has read romances for 30+ years, the erotic aspects of this novel were the best part. And this shouldn't be so - even in a romance novel. As the foundations on which all events (especially aspects of their physical passion) are based, characters of both the h&h have be so convincing that the reader almost falls a little in love with either or both. With skill, pertinent elements of their humanity (or 'alien' selves) and shared relationship can be evoked subtly (and will not therefore be off-puttingly OTT). The young heroine was appealing - I didn't gag over any overtly dumb decisions / actions by her. However, I couldn't say the same for the hero who did nothing for me - from the outset, he manipulated everyone especially his heroine. Nor was I convinced about the timelessness of their love where she or he or both (can't quite remember) is shown to be a reincarnation or re-manifestation of the same Beloved from the future...or was it the past?

What is not to like about a soul mate who has journeyed the eons of time to recapture an all-consuming love? Lucius is not your typical alpha male vampire. He is gorgeous and all powerful, but he is not so in control when it comes to Theo Becket. His vulnerability makes him not so perfect is just endearing to me. Theo may not be the English rose, but she has spirit and compassion. I love her ability to face her feelings without needing to hide behind pride and fear. Their courtship, while full of steamy erotic sensuality, is more than physical. Time was given for their love to blossom and their soul to bond truly. This is Book 5 of the Upyr Series, my first foray into this fascinating paranormal world. A totally stand alone entry and very well written. This particular story is set in the Regency era, a bonus for me. Additionally, the secondary characters are interesting and entertaining without stealing the show. What a touching love story and a totally satisfying read from beginning to the end.
