Outlander

Jamie made a fire in a sheltered spot, and sat down next to it. The rain had eased to a faint drizzle that misted the air and spangled my eyelashes with rainbows when I looked at the flames.

He sat staring into the fire for a long time. Finally he looked up at me, hands clasped around his knees.

"I said before that I'd not ask ye things ye had no wish to tell me. And I'd not ask ye now; but I must know, for your safety as well as mine." He paused, hesitating.

"Claire, if you've never been honest wi' me, be so now, for I must know the truth. Claire, are ye a witch?"

I gaped at him. "A witch? You—you can really ask that?" I thought he must be joking. He wasn't.

He took me by the shoulders and gripped me hard, staring into my eyes as though willing me to answer him.

"I must ask it, Claire! And you must tell me!"

"And if I were?" I asked through dry lips. "If you had thought I were a witch? Would you still have fought for me?"

"I would have gone to the stake with you!" he said violently. "And to hell beyond, if I must. But may the Lord Jesus have ... read full excerpt from: Outlander ebook

This is more than a story, it's a world Gabaldon has created in Outlander. Her gifted writing brings to life the story of Jamie and Claire, jumping off the pages. It changes your standards in romance.

Outlander begins when Claire Randall, a young combat nurse in World War II, moves to Scotland with her beloved husband to re-ignite their marriage interrupted by the war. Hiking one day, Claire accidentally passes through the stones of an ancient stone circle and wakes up to find herself in 16th century Scotland. Lost, alone, and confused, Claire's path crosses, and is inextricably linked to, a young Highland warrior, James Fraser. This story has everything; danger, suspense, passion, betrayal, true love, and tragedy. The time-travel element as well as the romance, while unconventional for a "serious" historical novel, is handled brilliantly by Gabaldon. Not, for the faint of heart-- the author tackles themes of a violent and sexual nature. However, the story is so realistic and beautifully told, it doesn't come off as a ploy to shock readers. Well-crafted and meticulously researched, The Outlander is historical fiction at it's finest-but never this much fun!

When I discovered this book, I had no idea what I was getting myself into. The beginning of a love affair with Claire & Jamie begins with this book. Diana Gabaldon weaves a story unlike no author could. The story leaves you not only with hundreds of unanswered questions, but with a passion for picking up the next book...and the next...and so on. Never before have I experienced such passion, heartbreak, pain, sympathy, happiness and love from a single book. Don't let the slow beginning fool you. Pick up this book and you won't regret it...will be only the beginning of wanting more and more. Ms. Gabaldon has ruined most other authors. Her descriptions and ability to pull you into the story are unlike any other. I would recommend this book even to my worst enemy.

Don't be intimidated by the size of this book. Even though Ms. Gabaldon refers to her work as historical fiction, romance readers have taken Jamie and Claire into their hearts and made them theirs. All characters are very well developed. The storyline, along with the rich history included, is exquisite. You will not be disappointed!

In fact the author's PhD shows itself this book. It is well balanced, well researched and very well put together. Her character development was well paced and still allowed for surprises to show themselves. I reserve the 5th star because she just couldn't quite bring herself to get really gritty in her sex scenes and it sort of lost a bit of it's potential momentum for that. Also it was really long, which was nice because it allowed for the story to unfold and come to completion. It wasn't too long and I was left satisfied with its ending.
