Romance title: Delicious
Sherry Thomas arrived on American soil at age thirteen. Within a year, with whatever English she scraped together and her trusty English-Chinese dictionary by her side, she was already plowing through the 600-page behemoth historical romances of the day. The vocabulary she gleaned from those stories of unquenchable ardor propelled her to great success on the SAT and the GRE and came in very handy when she turned to writing romances herself.

Sherry has a B.S. in economics from Louisiana State University and a master’s degree in accounting from the University of Texas at Austin. She lives in central Texas with her husband and two sons. When she’s not writing, she enjoys reading, playing computer games with her boys, and reading some more.

Chapter One

In retrospect people said it was a Cinderella story.

Notably missing was the personage of the Fairy Godmother. But other than that, the narrative seemed to contain all the elements of the fairy tale.

There was something of a modern prince. He had no royal blood, but he was a powerful man—London's foremost barrister, Mr. Gladstone's right hand—a man who would very likely one day occupy 10 Downing Street.

There was a woman who spent much of her life in the kitchen. In the eyes of many, she was a nobody. To others, she was one of the greatest cooks of her generation, her food said to be so divine that old men dined with the gusto of adolescent boys, and so seductive that lovers forsook each other as long as a single crumb remained on the table.

There was a ball; not the usual sort of ball that made it into fairy tales or even ordinary tales, but a ball nevertheless. There was the requisite Evilish Female Relative. And mostly importantly for connoisseurs of fairy tales, there was footgear left behind in a hurry—nothing so frivolous or fancy as glass slippers, yet carefully kept and cherished, with a flickering fl ... read full excerpt from: Delicious ebook

I read 'Private Arrangements,' Ms Thomas's debut novel last year and enjoyed this so much, I was very wary of being disappointed with 'Delicious.' So, I didn't buy this novel immediately but am now very glad I overcame my hesitation. I really like Ms Thomas's use of language and the time period (1890s I think) in which she has set her first 2 novels. I think too Ms Thomas is developing skill in her use of flash-backs although sometimes I got confused - but that's probably due to the time of day (late night/early morning) I was reading. The major premise on which the novel turns is that the heroine and hero were together for only one night ten years before the novel opens. And while he has just inherited a title and servants etc - including the heroine as his cook - she avoids being seen by him for a long while. There was a point, I believe, when he could have seen her face earlier (while she was bathing) but this is a very minor, tiny distraction. I don't often finish novels if for me, the heroine is too stupid or irritatingly inconsistent and the hero is too OTT-alpha. If however the h/h chemistry feels right and there are some laugh-out-loud moments then this keeps me going. So, if you are looking for a refreshing plot, evocative language and descriptions (especially food) which have not become jaded and trite with overuse in other novels, this is highly recommended. Particularly appealing moments were the correspondence between the h & h (as she avoids him) and the hero's interview with his Beloved's long-lost aunt at the end. I laughed particularly loudly and was also convinced that he proved himself worthy. Can't wait til Sherry T's 3rd novel is out in '09.
