Romance title: Veil of Midnight
Bound by blood, addicted to danger, they'll enter the darkest—and most erotic—place of all.

A warrior trained in bullets and blades, Renata cannot be bested by any man—vampire or mortal. But her most powerful weapon is her extraordinary psychic ability—a gift both rare and deadly. Now a stranger threatens her hard-won independence—a golden-haired vampire who lures her into a realm of darkness…and pleasure beyond imagining.

A combat-loving adrenaline junkie, Nikolai dispenses his own justice to enemies of the Breed—and his latest quarry is a ruthless assassin. One woman stands in his way: the seductive, cool-as-ice bodyguard, Renata. But Renata’s powers are put to the test when a loved one, a child, is threatened and she’s forced to turn to Niko for help. As the two join forces, as desire fans the flames of a deeper hunger, Renata’s life is under siege by a man who offers the exquisite pleasure of a blood bond—and a passion that could save or doom them both forever.…

Veil of Midnight

Chapter One

On stage in the cavernous jazz club below Montreal's street level, a crimson-lipped singer drawled into the microphone about the cruelty of love. Although her sultry voice was pleasant enough, the lyrics about blood and pain and pleasure clearly heartfelt, Nikolai wasn't listening. He wondered if she knew—if any of the dozens of humans packed into the intimate club knew—that they were sharing breathing space with vampires.

The two young females sucking down pink martinis in the dark corner banquette sure as hell didn't know it.

They were sandwiched between four such individuals, a group of slick, leather-clad males who were chatting them up—without much success—and trying to act like their bloodthirsty eyes hadn't been permanently fixed on the women's jugulars for the past fifteen minutes straight. Even though it was clear that the vampires were negotiating hard to get the humans out of the club with them, they weren't making much progress with their prospective blood Hosts.

Nikolai scoffed under his breath.

Amateurs.

He paid for the beer he'd left untouched on the bar and headed at an easy stroll towa ... read full excerpt from: Veil of Midnight ebook

I was waiting to read this part of the serires and now I don't know why. I stayed up late and woke early to finish it. Really ejoying this series and I am not getting sick of the characters like some other authors I could name. Great cross over to the next book in the series but I won't spoil it ;). If you liked the others in this series buy this one, you wont be disappointed

I was really looking forward to Niko's story, but it wasn't as good as I had hoped. Mainly, for me, it was the location the book was set in, and that most of the previous characters weren't in till the end. But I so love Niko, and it was still great, despite the above mentioned.

I love Lara Adrian. I can hardly wait for the next in her series to come out. I like them almost as much as J. R. Ward. Veil of midnight did not disappoint. In fact I can't decide which book I like best.

Have read all the books in this series so far and they are very good but something is missing when compared to JR Ward or Christine Feehan books. This story incorporates two very strong but compassionate leads in a fast paced and action-packed senario but I felt that it lacked sympathy for Renata and all that she had been put through by the vampires. This however doesn't take away from the overall story and I strongly recommend this book and look forward to the rest of the series and hope we see more of Hunter in the future.

2 out of 5 stars 2 01/30/2009
Reviewer: A viewer from Eugene, OR US
An OK read, though a bit pedestrian. I've been noticing that Lara Adrian's books are more and more contrived, almost to the point of boredom for the reader. While I enjoyed the general storyline of this book, I was often quite disappointed with how she got from Point A to Point B. Some of the more glaring problems were how the author changed "facts" within the story, that she used some tiresome male/female stereotpyes (negative ones, of course), and apparently lowered the IQ of more than one character just to steer events in the way that she wanted. Perhaps a good comparison would be cheesy horror movies--you know, the ones where you want to shout at the girl not to open the door because there's a killer on the other side, but of course she does. This book has several situations like that--you can see it coming from a mile away. With the first book of the series, I thought it had potential and I've been holding on to that hope, but with this book, I have to admit that unless the author makes some fairly signifcant changes with her next (namely, writing for readers with brains, not gullible idiots), I won't be wasting my time or money on her work anymore.
