On April 30, 1789, George Washington placed his hand on a Masonic
Bible, randomly opened to Genesis 49. This chapter is a prophecy of
blessing from a dying man-Jacob, whose name was changed to Israel-to
his twelve sons. The prophecy concerned both their futures and the
coming Messiah: Verse 10 reads, "The scepter shall not depart from
