Chapter One

Chicago, Wednesday, February 18, 2:00 P.M.

"You've got company, Kristen." Owen Madden pointed toward the window to the street where a man stood in a heavy winter coat, his head tilted in question.

Kristen Mayhew gave him a brief nod and he entered the diner where she'd escaped the enraged protests inside the courtroom and the barrage of questions from the press outside its doors. She stared into her soup as her boss, Executive Assistant State's Attorney John Alden sat on the stool beside her. "Coffee, please," he said and Owen got him a cup.

"How did you know I was here?" she asked, very quietly. "Lois told me that this is where you come for lunch." And breakfast and dinner, too, Kristen thought. If it didn't come in a microwavable carton, it came from Owen's. John's secretary knew her habits well. "The local station interrupted programming for the verdict and reaction," John said. "But you held your own with the press. Even that Richardson woman."

Prosecutor Kristen Mayhew finds herself the focus of a serial killer who calls himself 'your humble servant' and targets criminals she failed either to convict or get sentenced. He leaves hints that he's watching her, even in her own home... Detective Abe Reagan is newly assigned to homicide after 5 years of undercover job, and finds himself pulled not only into the serial killer case, but also in Kristen's life. He can't help but admire the prosecutor, who's determined to be invlolved in every step of finding this killer who's doing her 'favors'. Abe and Kristen find themselves drawn to each other. The killings quickly draw them closer, while they race to solve the case and save the next 'victim' from death. Thrilling and riveting, Karen Rose has managed (again) the perfect blend between suspense and romance. Dynamic story construction, enjoyable characters, well handled plot... Once you start, you cannot put it down! highly recommended.
