The Wild Child

Chapter One

Dominic Renbourne's head was pounding like a regimental drum. He came awake slowly, knowing he shouldn't have drunk so much at the boxing match the night before. A good evening, but he'd pay for it all day.

Belatedly he realized there was pounding on the door as well as in his head. Where the hell was Clement? Damn, his valet was still in the country visiting his ailing mother. Bloody nuisance.

Since the knocking showed no sign of abatement, Dominic swung his legs to the floor and took stock. The sun's rays said early afternoon, not morning. He still wore crumpled breeches and shirt, but had managed to get his coat and boots off before collapsing on the bed.

Yawning, he ambled from his bedroom into the sitting room. He hoped Clement's mother recovered soon; Dominic's rooms were a shambles. If matters got much worse, he'd have to find a charwoman to clean the place.

He swung op ... read full excerpt from The Wild Child ebook

This is the first MJ Putney book I read and was quite surprised that her focus wasn't on so-called 'perfect', "oh, I've led a blessed life and now I found my perfect mate" people. It is stunning to see her character development and get a sense of 'real life, with real problems' people from her books. I love what she did with this one. While Dominic was deceiving Merial into believing he was his older brother, Kyle, he was also troubled in his own way. And Merial is in no way perfect, although she is an interesting character as well. Most of the times historical romances develop plots and mysteries and cram the love into physical intimacy way too soon without the character development to even imagine that their love could ever endure the test of time. But Ms. Putney writes in such a way as to believe she writes about real people. Great book, but I suggest the Bartered Bride, which is actually the third in this series first, even if it is not in chronological order, because it is a perfect example of what this author is capable of.

This novel is very different from most of the novels of this period, and the first by this author that I have read. Dominic and his older brother, by 10 minutes, Kyle are the story beneath the story. Dominic takes the place of his older twin to go meet Kyle's future bride, Lady Meriel, who is considered to be mad. Kyle has something that he must do above all else and solicits Dominic's help in pretending to be Kyle until he can come back and decide if the marriage is to be agreeded upon by Lady Meriel. Neither dream that the outcome will forever change their lives. Kyle's story is poignant and although touched on to a small degree, is a very strong componet in the novel. The meeting of Dominic with Meriel and the relationship they build is a very well done story. All the characters are strong as well as being intregal to the story. I look forward to reading Kyle's story soon and recommend this book to all.
