I can't recall if I had read any of Ms Beverley's novels before this. But having finished 'Devilish,' I am not sure I will buy any more. I appreciated that we were to understand the hero as a truly unique 'prince among men' and that Diana was his true match. Although I hurried through the book in order to see how the h&h could possibly be together with his steadfast refusal to marry anyone (because of a fear that he will pass on his mother's madness) and I was more convinced about the hero's emotional development, I felt 'flat' at the end. Briefly, I thought about reading previous novels in order to know more about Rothgar? - I think that's his name - whose character evoked for me aspects of Francis Crawford (IMHO, Dorothy Dunnett's alpha hero of all time). But then on reflection, I thought that I would have been less curious about him and more pleased if Diana's character could have been more emotionally developed. She's a great one with the guns and bows (or is it swords?) and is a grand Duchess but sometimes beside Rothgar, I found her lacking or lacklustre.
