Reviewer: A viewer from Bronxville, US
Set over several decades in the 1100's, the novel follows the lives of a noble family, a working family and a monk. The story takes shape as the 3 groups become involved in the building of a cathedral. The book explores the base life, poverty and violence of this period of English history while speaking of the need for a lasting peace. There is a large amount of violence, sometimes too much as well as sexual scenes described in intimate detail - even the several rapes. I prefer much of this to be left to the imagination. The protagonists faced so much persecution that the book became difficult to read. I was at one point wondering if anything good would ever happen to these people. Although Follet is not a Christian (from intro) and the narrative is based on the orthodox church, readers who come from an protestant Christian background will find thier beliefs affirmed For example, it has much of a Job story theme but Follet's characters do not live happily ever after. This book really takes the reader down into the mud and the grime and the dirty straw floors of time. Overall, it seemed that the pillars of the earth were greed, ambition, violence and wealth at the expense of others. The King of England conspired to murder the Archbishop of Canterbury and instead of hanging, as any other person would have gotten, his punishment was a ceremonial flogging by ecclesiastical leaders. I realize this is historical and Follet can only work with the truth. But it sure makes one wonder about humanity when a heinous crime like murdering an archbishop in the nave of his own cathedral is met with a switch on the back.

Reviewer: Mike Watts from London, GB
I would never have associated Ken Follett with an erudite and above all gripping story based on life in the Middle Ages. It is strongly character driven and will open new perspectives and ideas of the past and of the buildings around us in the present. Don't think that this means that this book is just for "highbrows" - it is also a page-turning rippiing yarn! Can't wait to read the sequel "World without end"
