Lover Enshrined
In the shadows of the night in Caldwell, New York, there's a deadly war raging between vampires and their slayers. And there exists a secret band of brothers like no other?six vampire warriors, defenders of their race. And now, a dutiful twin must choose between two lives... Fiercely loyal to the Black Dagger Brotherhood, Phury has sacrificed himself for the good of the race, becoming the male responsible for keeping the Brotherhood's bloodlines alive. As Primale of the Chosen, he is to father the sons and daughters who will ensure that the traditions of the race survive and that there are warriors to fight those who want all vampires extinguished. As his first mate, the Chosen Cormia wants to win not only his body but his heart for herself- she sees the emotionally scarred male behind all his noble responsibility. But while the war with the Lessening Society grows more grim, and tragedy looms over the Brotherhood's mansion, Phury must decide between duty and love.

Believe the Publisher's Weekly review and not what the author peddles on her own website which would make you believe this is about Phury and Cormia and their love story. It's not. It's pretty much a very large book about the war, the vampire's world, and other factions she's bringing in to generate more books (sympaths, Moors, fallen angels, sheesh!). Inside this large book about all those other things (too many IMO) there's a semi-satisfying novella length (barely) story about Phury and Cormia and a good 70% of that is about Phury and the wizard (damned annoying) and his addiction. Phury and the readers got gipped. The rest of the story is good, I'll say that. If you like the younguns, John, Quinn, Blay and Lash, you'll love this because it's more about them than almost anyone else. You'll learn lots more about their families, some you'll love and some you'll really hate. I'll probably continue with the series out of curiosity, but I won't expect a romance that's for sure. I feel pretty confident that those days are over. If you want hot, steamy vampire romance with the Brothers, you'll have to reread Dark Lover because this is lightyears away from that "vein". LOL!

Don't bother with this unless you've read the rest of the series and are a huge fan. You'll be disappointed either way but at least if you're a fan of her early books then you may get a little something from this book's "sub-plots". Inverted commas because this book is nothing but subplots, the romance itself is completely secondary. Maybe even thirdly. Barely worth a flick.

Ward carries on the stories of all the characters, and while Phury's story is great for the main plot, it's John Matthew that I really wanted to read about. There's more and more uncovered about each character's past and it's just getting so much better with each twist and turn.

This is a very good addition to the series--there was some slow, repetitious character development and a lack of emphasis on Phury and Cormia's relationship, but a nice expansion of the series. This book isn't REALLY about Cormia and Phury, but about the Brotherhood itself and the war with the Lessers. What little time you spend with Cormia and Phury is good, but the novel spends more time building out the other characters than spotlighting why these two fall in love. Sadly, that is the reason for four stars, if JR Ward had spent a bit more time on these two rather than falling into the rote of spend-time-in-the-vicinity-of-someone-don't-interact-and-fall-in-love, it would have gotten 5 stars. I would have preferred that she write a seperate book about the brotherhood itself rather than gyping the character development of Cormia and Phury just to give the series three or four new characters to center books on.
