The story started off awesome and then took me through a love and hate readingship. Karen is the saving grace to Warlord's descend to darkness. After an intriguing sensual beginning, the following portion detailed Warlord's demented mind and dark actions, which resulted in a very pissed off heroine. While it is reasonable that Karen should be upset and angry, it was just too much, I felt too antagonized. It would be nice if the angst were broken up with glimpses, that beneath the demon, Warlord has a heart to be redeemed. In the second half, we see Karen, freed as her own master; and Adrik, who broke free from his evil alter ego, Warlord. The pace also picked up as Karen and Adrik tried to keep one step ahead of the evil that is chasing them. While I really enjoyed the plot, and am captivated by Warlord's love for Karen, she being his light in dark places, I just can't stomach Dodd's overly melodramatic, tear jerking style. This is the 3rd book of the Darkness Chosen series (total four books). I have no problem picking up the background without previous readings, however, this book ended on a cliff hanger for Book 4. The ending is basically the beginning for the next book. I hate that. Bleah!

Anticipating the arrival of this book, after reading Jasha and Rurik's stories, I found 'Into the Shadow', the best book in the series. I found Adrik's character edgier and over-whelming sexiness, but still realistic in the tone Christina Dodd sets for the book. The heroine, Karen, was a bit helpless to me at times, but their chemistry was quite laughable, in a good way, and good-natured. I did at times found the 'Warlord' phase of the book, quite unbelievable, but if one could imagine reading one of those primitive era books while reading this section, it would be quite enjoyable with the controlling component mixed with the over-powering need to be controlled by a dark love. I believe this is the best book out of the four (there is a fourth book released as 'Into the Flame"), because it does a nice transition, towards the end of the book, about the big mystery ahead and it blends and put together another piece of the saga that makes this series more dynamic than before.
