5 out of 5 stars Dark times ahead for Cassie Palmer 09/08/2009

'Embrace the Night' definitely leaves the reader wanting more! It's also hands down the best book of the series so far. Chance focuses much more on Pritkin than before, in that one of numerous questions shrouding his character is answered. I was happy about this because he's my favourite and his character happens to be fascinating no matter what he's doing. I also have to admit I was really surprised at some of the plot twists as I usually see most things coming but not this time! Pritkin as a character is a little more relaxed here but he's still himself, brave, blunt and also proves that he's still ten times smarter than all the other characters put together. Cassie also grows a lot during this instalment as she finally stops running and deals with the mess she's in, she also uses her wits to solve some of her problems rather than relying upon other means. The dry humour is still very much a defining feature of the story and there's quirkiness around every corner as we learn more about Cassie's world. I thought the attention to detail in this area is what elevates the material making it more real and atmospheric to the reader. The humour also gracefully balances the darker themes that pervade the novel. The book opens with Cassie looking for the Codex Merlini following on from the previous book that will enable her to lift that annoying geis which is binding her to Mircea. The main through point of the book is finding this book and even though the plot deviates (as with the others) it always comes back to this issue, which is thankfully resolved. As far as the romance goes I'm totally rooting for Pritkin. My favourite moments of the book consist of their intense interactions. What's nice is that they exist on equal footing. Cassie kind of loses her witty sense of humour around Mircea but around Pritkin they have this funny sardonic rapport with some cute in-jokes between them like Pritkin's coffee addiction.

This recent installment in the Cassandra Palmer series was very good. I cannot wait to read the next one. As a protagonist, Cassie is really starting to grow as a character . . . and her enemies are coming along with her just as well. Great balance of passionate and actions scenes in this book.
