I'd like to read the one that came before this one. I think it would help understand the story better. This is clearly one of a series and doesn't stand-alone very well. It's as if you come in an ongoing conversation that constantly references yet another conversation you know nothing about. The characters are interesting and the self-destructive anxt of Fred the mermaid is interesting but it still felt incomplete. I recommend getting the whole series together as opposed to just this one alone. I think it will be more satisfying.
