Mark of the Demon
Diana Rowland has lived her entire life below the Mason-Dixon line, uses "y'all" for second-person-plural, and otherwise has no southern accent (in her opinion.) She attended college at Georgia Tech where she earned a BS in Applied Mathematics, and after graduation forgot everything about higher math as quickly as possible.

She has worked as a bartender, a blackjack dealer, a pit boss, a street cop, a detective, a computer forensics specialist, a crime scene investigator, and a morgue assistant, which means that she’s seen more than her share of what humans can do to each other and to themselves. She won the marksmanship award in her Police Academy class, has a black belt in Hapkido, has handled numerous dead bodies in various states of decomposition, and can’t rollerblade to save her life.

Mark of the Demon

Chapter One

I could hear the intruder breaking into my house.

Unfortunately, it was in the same instant that the demon appeared before me.

The sound of shattering glass upstairs disrupted my focus for only a fraction of a second, but it was enough for the arcane portal to shift from my control and leap away from me like an untethered water hose. I made a frantic grasp at the portal, cold sweat breaking out under my arms as I struggled to wrench the power back into place. My heart slammed in my chest as I fought the uncontrolled energy, seizing each strand to bind and anchor it. My technique was raw and inelegant, but I didn't give a crap. I was only interested in surviving, not in how pretty it looked.

It felt like an eternity, but it was merely several frenzied seconds before I had the wildly fluctuating potencies settled and calmed. I cautiously loosened my hold as I took several deep, ragged breaths, struggling to slow the mad galloping of my pulse. That had been far too close for my peace of mind. If that loss of focus had come just a few -seconds earlier, I most likely would have been ripped apart—either by the maelstrom of t ... read full excerpt from: Mark of the Demon ebook

5 out of 5 stars Colour me impressed (4.5 stars) 09/08/2009
Reviewer: Persephone from England
Well I'm impressed. I have to say this first off: this is NOT Paranormal Romance and you will find no romance here, there's a little bit of sex at the start and sexual tension but that's it. This book is Urban Fantasy. There's greater importance given to character development and plot. Indeed, the heart of this book is Kara's personal growth and the development of her friendship with Ryan. Kara Gillian is a police officer that has just recently been promoted to Detective. She's a rather meek woman with a lot of insecurities and no social life to speak of -- she also finds herself thrown in at the deep end when her superior puts her in charge of a homicide case. An infamous ritualistic serial killer with a trail long gone cold has started leaving victims again; dubbed the 'Symbol Man' by the press. Kara has always had a special interest in this case and can hardly believe her luck when she's allocated this as her first homicide. On top of this she's assigned a special task force from the FBI: Agent Ryan Kristoff among them whose expertise lies in ritualistic killings. While Kara is grateful for the help, to her chagrin Ryan is somewhat disagreeable. Kara is also a summoner... someone who has the ability to summon demons. All these plot threads are nicely woven together and I thought Rowland did a superb job of a writing a well constructed mystery. I found Kara difficult to like at first, but around half way through I was captivated and admired her inner strength. I loved Agent Ryan Kristoff who was both a realistic male character and humourous to boot. His camaraderie and friendship with Kara was one of the best things about the book. It's hinted that certain characters possibly have more to them than even they realise. I look forward to finding out more. I'm guessing that future books will contain different stand alone cases to solve, and it will be the characters and demonic stuff that will be the overarching threads that tie the books together.

4 out of 5 stars Intrigue regarding a demon 08/19/2009
Reviewer: Paranormal Lover from Washington, DC US
This is Mrs. Rowland's first attempt at the paranormal romance genre and she does a great job! It's hard to put the book down from the first summoning to the last and the whole time you are trying to figure out what's really going on, if the characters are actually who they say they are, and how deep the mystery goes. The book relies heavily on the build up to solve the crimes taking place which if you love CSI you'll enjoy. The pull of attraction between the male leads and Kara is delicious and you don't really know who to root for. You are definitely left wanting more. It's an intense read and I can't wait to read the followup, Blood of a Demon, in February.
